Your Turf and the Environment
Throughout the history of synthetic grass, questions have been raised about the effects of turf on the environment. Coupled with these environmental concerns is the ongoing drought in California, which has grown to be so severe, that Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has called for citywide water restrictions and the adoption of a tiered water rate that would punish the Department of Water and Power customers who fail to conserve. An example of these new restrictions is that the use of sprinklers would be reduced to two days a week and could be cut to one day a week by summer, if the drought continues.
The question for many families has become how to avoid a punishment for water use while still using water for the family needs. Many families have resorted to brushing teeth or shaving with minimal water which saves about 60 gallons per year, installing a water saving toilet which saves about 240 gallons per year, and many families have abandoned the practice of hosing down their driveways (960 gallons saved per year) or not letting the water run while washing the car (2,600 gallons saved per year). While these practices conserve water, many families do not realize that replacing thier existing grass with YourTurf can save 30,000 to 56,000 gallons of water per year! Not only is a YourTurf synthetic lawn great for water conservation, it is also easy on the pocketbook since it cuts down drastically on the water bill. "The vast majority of people will actually save money if they comply to reduce their water use," Villaraigosa said, "those who don't will be penalized."
YourTurf is great for the environment in other ways also. YourTurf artificial turf begins as recycled plastic pellets, which are then transformed into grass-like fibers. Tons of worn out tires are recycled into safe and clean cryogenic rubber that provides an eco-friendly infill system. For example, a soccer or football field of synthetic turf requires around 100 tons of rubber, an amount that can be replaced with recycled rubber from about 22,000 old car tires. Also, having a YourTurf lawn eliminates the need for most herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides--eight billion pounds of these harmful chemicals are used each year in natural grass fields. Additionally, YourTurf's backing is largely soy-based, rather than a chemical urethane backing.
Even with the numerous environmental benefits YourTurf offers, there are still questions and concerns about safety. What about child safety? YourTurf uses cryogenic rubber from high-grade recycled tires, which are frozen, pressed, and sealed--a process that removes most impurities, including lead. Since the rubber is sealed it does not leave any black marks on clothing or skin. At YourTurf we are able to stand strong behind our products with assurances from reputable institutions such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) which concludes that, "There is no indication that exposure to turf could pose any harm. We are not recommending that communities shut down their playing fields." YourTurf is also great for pets. Gone are the days of the dog digging holes and creating divots in the yard. And YourTurf is easy to clean and resilient toward cleaning solutions. This means you, your children, and your pets can safely enjoy your beautiful YourTurf installation for many years while being kind to the environment.
