With the rising price of water making landscaping a more costly endeavor, YourTurf is working to provide a synthetic alternative to natural grass.

Diane Gardner, a design consultant at YourTurf's San Juan store, recently spoke of the benefits of synthetic grass, and how far technology has come.

Q:  How would you describe YourTurf?

A:   YourTurf is the top of the line, most natural looking synthetic grass on the market.

Q:  What do you offer?

A:  We have the newest technology in synthetic grass with the mono-filament turf.  Its got a duro-spine that is the most durable and longest lasting synthetic grass on the market.  We have three different models. The two-tone has a little yellow tone to it, so it looks very natural.  If the two-tone is too yellow, then the green mon is the medium shade of green.  Both of them look freshly mowed.  The the hard-soft is the darkest green.  Some of the blades are hard, sove are soft, and it looks very dense.  It has a very relaxed look to it.  All of them have a sand and rubber in-fill to hold the blades up for the next 25 years.

Q:  What are the most popular aspects of the business?

A:  Most of my buyers are dog owners because the dogs yellow and kill the back yard.  Now people can have a dog and a beautiful yard.  It usually cuts their water bill in half and they don't have to pay a gardener.  It pays for itself in water and gardening savings.  That's a big consideration.  They see how environmentally friendly synthetic grass is, how far it's come along, and they are concerned about droughts and water services.

Q:  What makes the business unique?

A:  We have the most permeable backing, which allows 40 inches of liquid an hour to drain through our turf.  That prevents odor problems with pets, mold or mildew and keeps it from deteriorating more quickly.

Q:  What are the most rewarding aspects of this business?

A:  Everyone is thrilled with their new yard.  It gives them a lot of pleasure to look out over their beautiful yard, and they always thank me.

Q:  What are the biggest challenges?

A: It's for people to recognize the value of synthetic grass.  They look at the cost, but they need to evaluate the savings over the long-haul.

Q:  What are your goals for the future?

A:  We are going to do more than 200 home and garden and pet shows this year.  We want to spread the word and show people how far synthetic grass has come.  People don't realize it has come a long way from Astroturf, so we need to educate them.
